Title: Baseball at the House of David
Contact: ,
Location: Pokagon Room
Many of our Community Forum attendees may recall a 2018 program on the Israelite House of David, a religious commune founded in Benton Harbor in 1903 by Benjamin Purnell and his wife, Mary. The Purnells frequently undertook new projects to attract members—a hotel, a zoo, an amusement park…and a barnstorming baseball team. Join us as Brian Ziebart recounts the days when bearded, long-haired House of David players attracted big crowds in the 1920s and1930s as they traveled the country, and more than a few times added celebrated major leaguers, including pitchers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Satchel Paige, to their lineups.
Presenter: Brian Carroll, PhD, Historian and Archivist, Israelite House of David
