Title: The Bridgman Red Raid
Contact: Julie Grynwich, 269-469-2933
Location: New Buffalo Township Library
In 1922, during America’s first Red Scare—when labor unrest and anarchist activity was seen as a socialist threat—Communists from across the country met in the dunes near Bridgman. An informant tipped off federal agents about the meeting, and agents from Chicago searched for the group dressed as farmers. One of the Communists spotted them and alerted his fellow meeting-goers. When the feds raided the meeting the next day, only 17 of the 76 attendees remained, and only two of those were tried. One was acquitted due to a hung jury. The second was convicted and appealed all the way to the Supreme Court, but died before the court upheld his verdict. A dissent from Justice Louis Brandeis later became the basis for declaring criminal syndicalism laws—laws that mostly targeted labor unions—unconstitutional.
Presenter: Nick Bogert, The Regional of Three Oaks Museum. Bogert’s presentations are notable for being especially well-researched and professionally executed.            269-469-2933
