Description: In recognition of Black History Month, our February film is Once Upon a Time…When We Were Colored, a 1995 release by director Tim Reid. Life in the segregated South was an extremely challenging and hurtful thing. And yet, against it all, a tightly connected rural community exercised a special power. This film celebrates the close bonds of family, friends and church that served to nurture, sustain and inspire a young boy growing up in the harshness of 1950s Mississippi. We’ll meet many vivid characters and experience touching moments that grab our hearts. The film is based on the critically acclaimed book by Clifton L. Taulbert. Roger Ebert’s four-star 1996 review of Once Upon a Time…When We Were Colored states, “I am aware of three screenings it has had at film festivals: before a largely black audience in Chicago, a largely white audience in Virginia, and a largely Asian audience in Honolulu. All three audiences gave it a standing ovation.” There you have it.
All are welcome, and there will be free popcorn. Expect the meeting to last about 2-1/2 hours.
