Contact: Julie Grynwich, 269-469-2933
Location: New Buffalo Township Library
Description: In honor of Women’s History Month (and in celebration of International Women’s Day), we will consider the story of a remarkable woman brought to the screen by a gifted woman director. Hema: The Dance of Life chronicles the artistic life of Hema Rajagopalan, the acclaimed Bharata Natyam dancer and founder of the Natya Dance Theatre. This documentary film, by Rana Segal, follows Hema’s journey from a child prodigy performing for India’s elite ruling class to her experiences on settling in America, where she blossomed as a dancer, choreographer, story teller and builder of wide community. Hema’s dynamic devotion to Bharata Natyam dance impacted more than the Chicago Indian community; she preserved her culture’s traditions for all artistic genres to experience. This film will captivate us with the history and significance of Bharata Natyam dance. It will add richness and depth to our cultural lives.
Special Note: Rana Segal, director of Hema, will be joining us at the screening to introduce her film. Segal is an award-winning director, producer and cinematographer. Her work has aired on PBS, The Learning Channel and Discovery Health Channel. She received an Emmy nomination for Painting the Town (about a Chicago muralist) and was also Emmy-nominated for Shifting Sands: On the Path to Sustainability, about the Indiana Dunes.
