Title: The Orphan Train in Michigan
Contact: ,
Location:
Description: Between 1854 and 1927, thousands of orphans, most from New York and New England, were shipped west on special “orphan trains” to find new lives in midwestern farms and factories. Approximately 12,500 found their way to Michigan, many of them sent by the New York Children’s Aid Society. A few were adopted; many worked as unpaid laborers. This presentation—along with more than 100 old photos—present the early formation of the orphan train, the collecting of children from various orphanages, the story of the orphan train agents and nurses, plus the “placement” process. Presenters: Father-and-son team Al and David Eicher presents a series of lectures on Michigan history at libraries, historical societies, retirement organizations and community groups throughout the state. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, underwritten in part by the Pokagon Fund.
