On September 8, 2023, American Fiction premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award. The story centers on a serious literature professor and author named Thelonious “Monk” Ellison who becomes a smashing success only when he jokingly (and under a pseudonym) writes a novel of the type he loathes.This comedy-drama, rich on many levels, is based on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett and won director Cord Jefferson an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2024.
